Working to solve food insecurity

Did you know that one out of five Houstonians is food insecure? Or that 40 percent of the food supply in the Houston area is being wasted? Barbara Bronstein, Founder of Second Servings of Houston, was tired of seeing food being thrown away that could instead be going to an individual in need, and she began working toward a solution.

Second Servings of Houston, a partner of The Way Home, was founded in 2014 and launched in 2015 with the purpose of alleviating hunger and eliminating food waste. According to their website, “Second Servings of Houston strives to alleviate hunger and reduce waste by reusing excess prepared and perishable food from hotels, caterers, sports venues, distributors, retailers, and other regulated food businesses and delivering it promptly and safely to approved charitable meal sites.”

Since 2015, Second Servings has partnered with over 175 food donors to serve more than 13,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity through 49 charity donation sites in the Houston area. Second Servings regularly collaborates with other partners of The Way Home such as Salvation Army, The Women’s Home, Bread of Life, Santa Maria Hostel and many more.

“I think that The Way Home is a wonderful program,” said Bronstein. “We’re able to call on a lot of places that have newly-housed adults and children and we are able to supply free, healthy food to them.” Second Servings also has a partnership with Brothers Produce, a local produce distributer, who supplies on average 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to the organization daily – and it’s often organic.

To-date, the organization has rescued more than one million pounds of food with a valuation of over $6 Million. Second Servings has five part-time drivers who are trained in safe food handling and do food pickup and delivery every day. There are also two other staff members who work in-house at the organization.

Second Servings offers volunteer opportunities for individuals to accompany drivers either during the day or on nights and weekends to rescue the food from waste and deliver it to a designated donation site.

If you are interested in volunteering with Second Servings, or in partnering with them, you can find more information on their website.
